Trifork going for Bekking’s record?

Updated: Nov 6

Trifork Sailing Team, skippered by Jens Dolmer, is standby in the quest of breaking Bouwe Bekking and the Beha brother’s 2020 record on Garmin Round Denmark Race – The Time Trial.

Trifork Sailing Team is standby from today October 29, 2022, until November 10, 2022. Their aim is to steal trophy from Bouwe Bekking by breaking his 2 years old record on the 770 natical miles long Garmin Round Denmark Race – The Time Trial distance.

Turbo Charged challenger

The weapon chosen for the record attempt is the VO 70, Trifork. The boat was originally Ericsson 4, designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian. The boat won the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race, and many consider Ericsson 4 as the best Volvo 70 ever built. Although an older boat Trifork is much more than a fast cruiser, as skipper Jens Dolmer, has managed to modify the boat into a turbo-charged offshore racer with a.m. a longer bow sprit and side foils.

Bouwe sailed mainly upwind

In 2020 Bouwe Bekking sailed the VO65 Childhood 1 with a mixed Pro/Am crew among others featuring Danish Olympic sailor Katja Iversen and the Danish celebrity brothers Theis and Emil Beha. They made a total distance of 882 nautical miles but more importantly they sailed upwind 59% of the time which is far from optimal for making records. In other words, if the right weather window opens Trifrok have more than just a fair chance of beating the record of 70 hours, 24 minutes, 21 seconds.

About Garmin Round Denmark Race – The Time Trial

Garmin Round Denmark Race – The Time Trail is the third Garmin Round Denmark Race discipline. Whereas Garmin Round Denmark Race inshore and offshore are fleet races with a fixed starting date on August 3rd2023 and a rather open course The Time Trial is different. Here the aim is to beat the clock. The participant choses the time for the start on his/her own. Also the sailing direction clock wise or counter clockwise is optional. The course is how ever less open than the fleet race course and avoids wind mill farms and the major traffic separations zones.

See the course and read the Racing Instructions here.

Garmin Round Denmark 2023 Race is organized by Shorthand Event Management in collaboration with Sailing Aarhus and Aarhus International Sailingcenter. In 2023, the event takes place for the third time. The offshore event starts out of Esbjerg and finishes in Aarhus. The event is a collaboration with the sailing club Esbjerg Søsport, the Municipality of Esbjerg and the Garmin Round Denmark Race partners.
